20200527 Air Conditioners

Yesterday I was speaking with a close friend who bought a 1930's house in Chicago. She told me that suddenly summer has arrived, the temperature is in the 90's and it is uncomfortable inside and outside. "We want to put in central air conditioning, but that would entail a renovation of the house's electricity wiring and we can't afford that now." Today, taking a break from working on my research into insulation materials to reduce energy consumption for cooling, I was listening to Malcolm Gladwell's podcast Revisionist History, and there was an advertisement for Flashback. One of the three episodes mentioned was about Air Conditioning  - an interesting lesson about how the cooling technology had a significant effect on the US Government, population changes in the USA and future political power. And today , I had composed a letter to real estate appraiser in the morning on how shed roofs above and disengaged from buildings are proven to keep them ...

20200324 Deliverance

Yesterday , I stumbled upon Kermit the Frog and Steve Martin in their swampy rendition of Dueling Banjos. Playing it awarded me a moment of blissful rest from the torrent of  negative Covid-19 news , as the music, forest and humor respite from another day of isolation.     Today, I read in the New York Times that Eric Weissberg, who played the banjo in the soundtrack of the duel in the movie Deliverance, passed away.  https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/23/arts/music/eric-weissberg-dies.htm It is a tune that is embedded in my mind. There is another sync here as well: Yesterday I was speaking with my 81 year old mother, who is in Covid-19 lock-down with my 87 year old father in their apartment in a senior living facility. Dad has serious cognitive challenges and asked my mother when he woke up "Am I alive?" Mom assured him that he was. Dad was dubious and asked again, and again, and then "How do you know?" unwilling to accept her con...

20190524 break

Yesterday  I was washing the dinner dishes in our communal dining hall. Haelan, who works in the kitchen during the week, said "Nice role reversal". I said "you deserve the rest". He responded "one of your best lessons was The Art of Taking a Break." Today  I asked Haelan what he meant, recognized a sync on today's page in my "The Idea Book" diary, and the sync with the book I'm reading "Not Doing". Haelan explained "Your lesson on the Art of Taking a Break in the Green Apprenticeship Permaculture course was an excellent experience [it includes a guided meditation, text study, conversation about family and culture, personal sharing and poetry]. All of the Green Apprenticeship Permaculture course was intense with lots of doing, building and technology. You then brought up the importance of taking a break, the concept of a Shabbat, a whole day of rest, of not doing. I hadn't considered it before. I appreciate tod...

20190324 chance

Today I get a Brilliant quiz about random probability. Yesterday a friend texts me about her brilliant friend's comment (that is irrelevant according to random probability). Random or improbable : it's fun to win!

20190323 Lace in Time

Yesterday I saw photos of a friend's Scottish wedding. The bride's laced dress reminded me of time traveling Outlander Claire's Scottish wedding dress.   Today I learned about the benefits and disturbing side effects of time travel .

20190322 Equinox

Today  Youtube offered me a lesson on  Wabi Sabi . Yesterday I wrote a Haiku, I watched the full moon rise, I spoke with Mike Kaplin about Raku clay fire ovens (to properly coat the interior of pizza/bread/mass ovens made from local clay).  And to sync the sync today, I watched a short video from Wabi Sabi Studios  about the thread of life, which made me think of  Adam and Daniel, so I sent it to them...  And even before Daniel saw it, he told me about his theater design project based on the Greek mythological  Moirai who control the thread of life of every mortal. "Wabi-sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect."   -  Richard Powell This rare equinox Of sunset and full moonshine Balancing earth time May the balance of earth time, sun light and moon shine bring peace to our lives.

20190321 One Straw Friendversary

Today Facebook notified me that Today Larry Korn and I have a Friendversary. Yesterday I told my class about Larry Korn. Yesterday in class, the Ethics of Permaculture, I shared Larry's experience with Masanobu Fukuoka with our 63rd cohort of the Green Apprenticeship . I shared with them an essay Larry wrote comparing Bill Mollison's Permaculture approach to regenerative agriculture and Fukuoka's - with an assignment to consider what is similar, what is different and why (site, climate and culture...). I have never, or should I say, have not yet met Larry. After reading his work, watching videos he's made and deciding to include his insights in class, I contacted him. We are Facebook friends and this way I know when he'll be teaching and can share this information with my network. I told my students that when they grow from reading a book, learn from a website, or watch a film that sticks with them, they have an opportunity to reach out to the autho...
